Shiatsu is a Japanese art of healing that originally developed in China and has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. The technique evolves from ancient healing practices which promote our body's own healing abilities and focuses on prevention of disease. In China a doctor wasn't paid to give treatment to ill people but to keep a person healthy. As soon as a person became ill, he received his treatment for free.

The Chinese and Japanese were not the only past civilizations to practice these healing arts. Evidence has been discovered that Egyptians, the Bantu people of South Africa, the Eskimos and the South American Indians all practiced these healing techniques. The best evidence discovered was the Ice Man found in the Otzal Alps in September 1991. The oldest mummified human body shows 15 well preserved tattoo groups of his back and legs that if pressure was applied would alleviate lower back pain. Tests reveal that the iceman suffered from arthrosis of the lumbar spine which would cause lower back pain. Through carbon dating the iceman is believed to be 5,200 years old!
